Resources are the grand key to discovery and are essential to an effective interdisciplinary individual option program.
There is an old saying, "When your green, you grow, when your ripe, you rot." And when you rot, you stink. The idea is always to be "green and growing," to be interested, to develop a love or thirst for knowledge. This is what enable a person to carryon and achieve one's dreams. In other words, learn to be interested in many things, and your whole life will be interesting. There is a whole world out there to be discovered -- the cutting edge of advance knowledge and the tools of one's trade. Mastering the specific knowledge in one's chosen field can be exhilarating. The point is, knowledge is power -- the power to move forward and succeed and serve mankind as well as building a future for oneself. This can be an exciting adventure, which is what is desired for all our students. It is the whole purpose behind individual option and interdisciplinary studies.
The ability to obtain an understanding of the best practices that are evidence-based and truly effective, the most current and valid research available on any important subject or field of study, the ideas that can make a difference personally and for others, is an extremely important need to create an effective individual option program that is interdisciplinary in nature.
The International Association for Distance Learning
(IADL), of which we are in the process of becoming accredited members, has assembled an impressive amount of resources and materials on distance learning and interdisciplinary studies for students, practitioners, and institutions. (See http://www.iadl.org.uk/resources.htm
The ability to find hidden treasures of knowledge does not come easy or without effort. There is no free lunch, but there are online resources to help one dig through the clutter and distractions and discover what is truly valuable and of great worth in one's field of study. (See http://www.iadl.org.uk/OnlineResources.htm
Akamai University, which is accredited with ACCREDITATION SERVICE FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (ASIC),
), has a large list of resources for the benefit of their students, which our students can access. We are working on developing a relationship with them for cross recognition of credit. Their resource pages start at the following address: http://www.akamaiuniversity.us/vl_dir.htm
We encourage our students to learn to use what is available to them that they might find and discover what will help them create a superior education and a better personal and professional life. However, like all great endeavors, this requires a determination to succeed in spite of set-backs. Dedication, drive and commitment make all the difference.
